Helping those who have suffered from abuse whether that’s physical, sexual, or emotional is perhaps one of the most difficult areas of law to work within, and that’s why it takes a special kind of person to do it. But that’s what we’re looking for in this hire.
You’ll need to be a strong litigator, but one who can work with empathy and compassion whilst maintaining a professional eye on achieving the right result for often the most vulnerable of clients.
We’re ideally looking for an NQ-2 years’ PQE solicitor and where ideally you’ll have experience with Abuse cases, we’d also be open to someone who comes from a more traditional PI or EL/PL background as long as you have a genuine interest in working with this specialist area. In addition we’d be open to hearing from someone who perhaps has less litigation experience but is used to working within a legally aided environment, as long as you are aware this is a highly litigated role.
We would also be interested in hearing from a more experience Solicitor with experience of working within Abuse (the salary quoted could change for the right person), so if that applies to you then please get in touch.
So what sort of work would you be getting involved with? Well our cases are all legal aid funded, it’s multi-track Personal Injury, pleaded litigated cases, where we usually instruct barristers to get the best result for us at court. The work is outside of any fixed costs regimes so doesn’t suffer from some of the issues that other areas of PI are currently experiencing.
Due to the nature of their situation, our clients are vulnerable; they might suffer from addiction or indeed are sometimes in prison – so you’ll have to be able to work under these circumstances. You’ll need to be proactive and be the one to push the case along. But the personal rewards for getting the right result can be immense.
The role is predominantly working from home, with only 1-2 days per month being spent in the office – although for those who might be less experienced there might be a need to spend a greater time in the office initially in order to train, develop and be supervised. Although the ideal location is Manchester (or commutable) there is scope for someone to be based anywhere that they can reach one of our 9 offices (the current trainee in this area works from London).
This is a brand new role, an addition to our existing team, so it will be one that will grow with the person we hire. That means that you won’t be dropped into the deep-end with a full file allocation on day one, your caseload will grow as your experience does also. It’s also likely that they’ll be limited litigated files initially, so again if your experience is more legal aid focused, then you’ll have time to hone your skills as a litigator. What we’re really looking for is someone who has the empathy to deal with this area, but who has the natural litigation skills it needs, but who especially wants to build a long term career within this niche area of law.
